In Third Round Chiefs Draft Offense

From the Truman Sports Complex

With their own choice and a selection they picked up in a late third-round trade with the Houston Texans, the Chiefs went offense as the second-day of the 2010 NFL Draft went down.

With the 68th selection, the Chiefs grabbed Illinois G Jon Asamoah in the third round.

Then, after engineering a trade with the Texans for the 93rd selection, they drafted Iowa TE Tony Moeaki.

Asamoah, 6-4, 305 pounds, was a three-year starter at right guard for the Illini, starting 37 consecutive games for head coach Ron Zook.  He earned second-team All-Big 10 honors as a senior. A native of Park Forest, Illinois, he attend Rich East High School where he received all-league honors.

Moeaki, 6-3, 252 pounds, had an injury-filled career at Iowa. He missed 16 games in his last three seasons with different injuries. The Illinois native caught 76 passes for 953 yards and 11 TD catches.

To get that 93rd selection, the  Chiefs gave up their fourth-round pick (#102) and one of their fifth-round selections (#144.)

That leaves them with two fifth-round picks for the third and final day of the Draft on Saturday.

At least Asamoah doesn’t return kicks. Defense on Saturday?

Too late. Look at Mayock’s best available. Never hear of any of them. Of course, if Pioli knows something, might find a diamond but then I look at the 2nd round.

I think Pioli believes our defensive front seven will be dramatically improved with a full year in the system and with Crennel, not to mention another year of development from Jackson. When you add the kind of speed in the secondary we just did (and I fully expect to add more by moving Washington to safety now that we have Arenas at nickel) we will be much improved no matter what other move we make. Expect to see Jackson,Dorsey NT, and Magee quite a bit this year.

You all want to complain about ,do this ,complain about the star reciver that the Chiefs have that only catches HALF the passes , when Tony G . used to catch almost all of them .
Theres a chance this guy is big enough and serious and will do it right !!!!!!!
Every time you throw a Football to a player that does not catch it ( TG- caught passes 5 feet away from ) it’s like the old LJ runs –punting pratice and NO – NONE chances to keep the ball ….LOSE – LOSE -LOSE , Their something about it . I like it !

Moeaki is an excellent TE .. fast, great hands with all the intangibles that create an outstanding player in the NFL … I couldn’t be happier with this pick!! Tony who ?

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Obviously Moeaki is something special, we gave up 2 picks to get him. Sort of like OConnel last year. Oh yes, Moeaki has never had a full year of college football, injuries but thanks ratso, for telling us what an excellent TE he is, by the by he has no ABILITY TO STREACH THE FIELD. Yeah, he fits right in with Jackson, Magee, Lawrence, Williams. All excellent picks and do not forget the 2010 2nd rounders. I can see a superbowl in the future, if you buy tickets.

Not sure why we would give up a #5 to move up 9 positions and draft Moeaki. Chances are that he would have still been there at 102 and if he wasn’t…whoopee. A guy like Dennis Pitta who is actually healthy will probably have a better NFL career any way.

yeah, of course, you’re a much better analyst than Scott Pioli, aPauled. I’m sure you watched a lot more film. And oh, by the way, if they thought he would last, they clearly wouldn’t have made the move. He could have been gone the next pick.

I LOVE this draft. Finally, we are filling up the team with playmakers!

I can see the TE pick as smart- very smart. We have a blocking TE, a post up tall TE but no speed TE. This offense is being built for speed MISMATCH against the opposing teams who use the 3-4.

Stop and think…imagine a big, tall, (not blazing speed but fast) wide receiver with a TE number and a LB defender. This is vintage Charlie Weis!

I saw Denver’s Schefler take over games last year. This is ours.

  • April 23, 2010  - aPauled says:

Well Anonymous I’m sure that you are such a great analyst and watched a lot of film to express the opinion that you LOVE this draft. What a moronic statement.

napahobbs, Dennis Pitta is the prototypical H-Back that just described.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Look, nobodies said this guy has speed. Also he was injured every year in college. What do the Chiefs do with Pope, Cottam, and Oconnel? How many misses can there be at TE for numbnuts Pioli?

By the by, just how will the Chiefs stop the run this year? Who will be the stud LBs? I know we can let our S tackle everyone.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Actually, they gave up their 4th AND a 5th to move up for this guy.

Here’s the scouting report I posted on the other article:

“Moeaki has been a bit of a disappointment since coming to Iowa as the top-ranked high school tight end in the country. He has struggled to stay on the field as he has missed games in virtually every season of his career at Iowa. He is a good athlete but lacks a second gear to stretch the secondary down the middle and lacks a big burst coming out of his cuts to separate from defenders. He shows effort as a blocker but lacks the lower body strength to block with much power. His best shot may be as an H-back or a tight end that is generally split out and lined up off the line of scrimmage.”

Rave review rigth there, huh? Sounds like a winner to me. Certainly worth giving up our 4th and a 5th to move up a few spots for. Ooooo…I’ve got goosebumps.

We drafted some good players today. No argument. Now, I’m anxious to see what the plan is for filling some of the positions we actually really, seriously need.

As for tomorrow? I don’t even care anymore. I guess we don’t have much left anyway…after trading two pick for this amazing TE. F**K!

I could not have been much higher before this draft and, while Berry was not my guy, he fit my idea of what a first round pick should be. But it will soon be over. Nothing much left to come our way on the final day. To leave this rotten taste in my mouth from this picks (yes the G was good one), this draft may well be worse than last years and I hated that one. Pioli, what a wasted opportunity.

  • April 23, 2010  - Dave S says:

Well according to Kirk Ferentz he is the most talented TE he has ever coached. Who was that other TE he coached a couple years ago? Oh yeah…Dallas Clark.

Of course some of you nay sayers have probably never heard of him either.

    Way to go Scott(Steadman)Pioli

  • April 24, 2010  - colby says:

Three years in a row we reach on a TE. Personally, I’d rather have seen them take Dennis Pitta or Jimmy Graham but what do I know? Look at Pioli’s history, he drafted a lot of TEs in New England. This draft is much better than last year’s in my opinion, but I think taking Arenas over Cody will come back to bite them.

  • April 24, 2010  - el cid says:

If I remember, the college coach who sold Sims to the Chiefs said it was Sims not Culpepper who was dominate on their DL.

Dave get over yourself, coaches will say anything ANYTHING to get a kid drafted in the NFL so they can tell HS recruits how many kid they put in the NFL. Get real, or at least be aware.

  • April 24, 2010  - Dave says:

Hey Anonymous – i don’t know aPauled, but my $ says he would draft better than Paoli. Just look at the 2009 draft – how has that worked out?

When Chucky referred to some NFL organizations as dumbxxxes he was surely referring to the Chiefs.

  • April 24, 2010  - Lindzey Lohaan says:

You’re right Dave! Only, I don’t know who Paoli is?? DUMBXXX!

Anyway, like, back to the Chiefs… The problem with this site is that it’s filled with fans who live in the past!

I believe we are finally making positive steps forward. Of course, everyone wants the result and doesn’t like being in the process. What idiots you guy’s are…I would never date you.

aPauled and Dave couldn’t hit the g spot on a 20 lb puxxy!
