In the Second Round It’s McCluster & Arenas

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs stayed in the Southeastern Conference Friday evening with their two selections in the second round of the NFL Draft.

With the 36th selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Chiefs drafted RB/WR/Returner Dexter McCluster out of the University of Mississippi.

At No. 5o they selected Alabama CB/Returner Javier Arenas.

McCluster, 5-9 and 172 pounds, handled running back duties  for Ole Miss, as well as working as a receiver and a returner.

Arenas, 5-9, 195 pounds, was one of the best career returners in college football history.

Sigh…McCluster???? they must plan using him in in the return game and as a slot reciever…

  • April 23, 2010  - gorillafan says:

WOW, didnt expect that. Another playmaker. and he can handle returns maybe, a slot reciever, and a rb. again, not what we expected but another impact player, this time on offense, we need that, im not going to complain!!

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

    Dexter McCluster.

Nice addition. I guess. I hope Pioli knows what he’s doing here.

I had that feeling that the Chiefs were going to do something….um different. I hope this is the pick I had the feeling about, and it doesn’t go downhill from here.

I think there are better WR’s still there. Good NT’s are still there. Anyone in the Chiefs organization think we might need a little help at the Linebacker position?

    Can’t help but say it….WTF?

    At least it wasn’t Clausen.

  • April 23, 2010  - gorillafan says:

    “At least it wasn’t Clausen”

No kidding. IDK, We drafted a playmaker on D now we drafted a playmaker on our O. Good, we need both, but now is the time we get our NEEDS from here on out!!!!

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Seeems like a luxury pick to me. Yes, the kid can play. But like you say, gorillfan…we have serious needs. And that wasn’t really one of them.

Eric Berry alone isn’t going to magically transform our Defense into Top 10.

Maybe I need to let this one sink in a little…but right now, I’m puzzled. I don’t hate the pick. I just don’t see how in the hell we could afford it. Hopefully, Pioli has something in the works?

  • April 23, 2010  - Michael says:

I’m not saying I don’t like McCluster; in fact, I was hoping KC might get him somewhere along the line.

But, that horrible, horrible defense…Berry can’t do it all. I love the defensive backfield, and I expect improvement from Jackson, Dorsey, Hali and DJ, but that still leaves at least two linebackers, and at least one nose tackle to get. And, although I think the OL will be fine, they need some young guys there, too. The Chiefs didn’t sign any veteran free agent linebackers, and just one veteran nose tackle.

McCluster adds to three positions at RB, KR and WR, but it still seems like a luxury pick to me.

I with you, Mad Chief, I’m hoping not to be shocked with the remaining picks.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

After the 09 draft and Berry this year, I admit it, I am lost. McCluster is not a bad pick just a strange one. Seemed to me a WR or LB would have been the way to go but I am nutz anyway.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Well, he did play a lot of WR. But, at 5-9 and 170? Dude is small.

I guess Weis must not be that “high” on Golden Tate?

I’m with you, el cid. I’m lost.

And would somebody please pick Clausen, damnit. As long as he’s there…I can’t fight the feeling that we might take him.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Arenas, CB. newest Chief. I actually hate this pick. Arenas is a fine kid but what need was this. LINEBACKER or WIDE OUT, what is going on here. I desparately wanted 4 starters from this draft, folks, ain’t going to happen.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

    And now a CB?

    I’m speechless.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Get this the Chiefs spin doc are saying McCluster is a WR. Not to bad, the kid said he has not been a returner for a long time. So I guess he is now a WR. Is that stupid or what? Also the Chiefs spin docs are saying the DB are being overhauled by speedy guys. They are going to be because the front seven is going to not tackle anyone.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

I guess I completely misunderstood the needs of our Defense. Apparently, we’re fine at Nose Tackle and Linebacker.

I said a few days ago, that I wondered how Crennel viewed what we already had here…and how closely his thoughts of what we need measured up against mine? We’re not even close, I guess. Oh well…he’s the expert. Not me.

But, I still absolutely cannot believe we took a Corner with our third pick. I had a bad feeling start creeping in this afternoon…after my Berry high wore off. It’s looking like my feeling was right.

I never claimed to be an expert. But, I guess I just don’t know jack-sh*t about our team, and what our weaknesses are.

  • April 23, 2010  - SG says:

Now, we have a name to decide if trading Gonzalez was a good move or not…let’s see…we got…Golden Tate? Nooo… we got…Mount Cody? Nooo… Jon Asamoah? No…

So where does Mount Cody go? To the Baltimore Ravens. Thanks Scott Pioli. Sorry – you don’t get a mulligan on this.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Really hate to agree with Mad Chief but today does not match my view of the Chiefs. Had to turn off Chiefs site, made me want to vomit about how McCluster and Arenas are just what the Chiefs need. So much garbage. I know they get paid by Pioli but WTF these were not need of my Chiefs.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

I wasn’t sold on Cody as out NT…but damn, get SOMEBODY. I guess CB was a bigger need.

  • April 23, 2010  - SG says:

“I guess CB was a bigger need.”

Yeah we didn’t need the safety valve for our offense and the approximate 80 catches for 800-1000 yards and 8-10 TD’s, nor that “man of the year” type player for this team. CB was a MUST-HAVE to trade #88 to the DIRTY BIRDS.

Please note though, Golden Tate is still on the board (at the moment).

  • April 23, 2010  - Stiv says:

I hate to say it, but I don’t like either of the 2nd round picks. We have a severe need at NT and our inside LB’ers aren’t very good, plus an offensive lineman would have been nice.

I guess it’ll be interesting to see what we do in the 3rd. Hopefully it won’t be another head scratcher.

  • April 23, 2010  - SG says:

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Blasted Seahawks!!! Don’t take Tate!!!

  • April 23, 2010  - Patrick says:

I am predicting that McCluster,is going to play with a style between Eddie Royaland Percy Harvin, with an emphasis on Royality. I hope he comes to fruition….as far as the corner.

If the D-Line can continue actualizing their potential and if in fact through the draft our secondary is considerable better…those suckerass donkey’s and faiders will be swarmed on.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

    That’s all well and good.

But, who’s going to stop the opposing team from running all over us? The guys we already have, I guess. I sure hope they improve from last year. Teams may have a hard time passing on us. Problem is, they won’t have to.

  • April 23, 2010  - True Red & Gold says:

Weird 2nd round guys. Seems to me that they used both picks in an attempt to find a return man. Which is a big time need but can we afford to use two picks to find one. I don’t like this draft so far. I do like the 3rd round pick though.

  • April 23, 2010  - ThunderChief says:

I guess I get the picks but only if Pioli has a master plan in mind that allows him the luxury of adding additional pieces later for a playoff run in 2011 at the earliest. That sort of makes sense of these first 4 picks.

Living in SEC country, I’ve seen McCluster and Arenas play in numerous games. They do stick out with their skill sets. Ole Miss used him in wildcat sets, as a RB and receiver. He makes things happen, a playmaker.

The same can be said of Arenas. He has mastered the art of returning, is a sure tackler and a smart player. He too, is a playmaker as he’s adept at making tacklers miss and always causes the other team’s coaches to hold their breath every time he circles under a punt or kickoff.

But where’s the DT, ILB, and outside rush specialist???? To be added next year or a later time down the road to complete the makeover? I guess that’s the plan.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Mad Chief, I told you this draft would go a long way into seeing how Pioli view the NFL, the Chiefs, and the future.

Cannot figure out Berry, with our vast needs in special teams or converting a college player into someone he never was, we should have picked NT Cody and converted him to punter.

This second day was all about special teams. I wanted a monster mike LB but we do not need one. Some of you wanted a WR with hands and speed, don’t need one we have Bowe. Wanted a OL, got a guard, just who does he replace Waters or Lilja? Some wanted DL, don’t need no stinkin’ DL. No we needed a returner/nickle back and gave away Tony G for him. I bought into Pioli being something special, especially after signing the two new coaches but, bro, this draft mirrors the last, not very good.
PS with the arrived of this second round, do we say by, by to 09 draftee Lawrence, WR, and Williams, RB. They could not play anyway..

  • April 23, 2010  - Michael says:

Well, I did get shocked again. This is a very good draft, and I like it. It just looks like a draft for another team, not the Kansas City Chiefs.

Berry and Asamough are great picks. Arenas and McCluster are good picks; both are little tough guys who are playmakers.

But, just like everyone else I want to know WHAT ABOUT THE DEFENSIVE FRONT SEVEN? I’ll even concede the Chiefs might do well enough with Shaun Smith/Edwards at nose, and Dorsey sliding inside sometimes (which apparently they are very serious about)-maybe a Magee, Dorsey, Jackson look.

That still leaves Linebacker. Two of them.

And a nose tackle. Cuz I know they need a nose tackle!

  • April 23, 2010  - True Red & Gold says:

I am really looking forward to Bob’s take on Friday’s draft. Bob give us some good news and explain what is going on and what the rational is in the Chiefs war room.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Michael, we, the Chiefs do not need a front seven on defense, apparently? I listened to the Chiefs site until my stomach hurt. These picks were brilliant and just what was needed. Do not forget we now have depth at guard and a RB converting to WR, and a returner/nickle back. What more do you want? These guys spell the difference between a 4-12 team and a playoff bound team, …..yeah, right.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Another TE? WTF??? My feeling turned out to be worse than I thought. A TE. You’ve got to be effing kidding me.

Good thing we’ve got another playmaker on Offense…and I’d say we now have a damn good Secondary.

Too bad we’ll still get beat with the opposing team’s running game. Unbelievable.

Pioli and Crennel must think we’re fine on the Front 7. I hope they’re right. Guess they more than we do?

These guys are good players…don’t get me wrong. But, I don’t see anyone outside of Berry at a position of pressing need. Our D-line and LB’s were our absolute weakest areas. Stopping the run. And we got NOTHING there? Wow. I’m at a loss here.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Here’s the scouting report on Moeaki:

“Moeaki has been a bit of a disappointment since coming to Iowa as the top-ranked high school tight end in the country. He has struggled to stay on the field as he has missed games in virtually every season of his career at Iowa. He is a good athlete but lacks a second gear to stretch the secondary down the middle and lacks a big burst coming out of his cuts to separate from defenders. He shows effort as a blocker but lacks the lower body strength to block with much power. His best shot may be as an H-back or a tight end that is generally split out and lined up off the line of scrimmage.”

Good thing we traded up for this guy. Sounds like an All-Pro in the making.

  • April 23, 2010  - el cid says:

Got to believe Pioli has a blind spot for TEs. Last year gave up a pick for OConnel and not two picks for Moeaki. This draft is turning into a big a joke as last years. Maybe it will all come together in 3-4 years, maybe not.

  • April 23, 2010  - napahobbs says:

I am amazed at the loss of big picture here.

1st- Our projected needs for the draft were based on what offensive and defensive scheme were run in 2009 and how players were used in that scheme. In 2010 we have two VERY DIFFERENT (and very experienced) coordinators.

They will utilize our EXISTING guys in very different ways, especially Romeo on defense.
(Go back and see the changes he made in NE and Cleveland). Let me give you one example. Romeo likes to blitz WIL LB up the middle. When DJ blitzed up middle he disrupted every time but Clancy only had him do it ~7 times.

2nd- Our weakness on front seven against the runs up the middle had more to do with the sub LB’s. I went back and watched the last 8 games (only defense) and Dorsey,Edwards,Jackson, D.J. and D. Williams did fine AS LONG AS Mays and Belcher were not in. On passing downs McGee, Edwards and Gilbery were very solid on pressure- they just were not inserted very often-or as a unit.

3rd- Our RB/Slot pick and TE pick are going to create nightmare matchup problems with 4-3 defense teams and 3-4 defenses where OLB’s are more rushers than cover capable. We will see the next Eddie Royal (not Wes Welker) and defenses will be forced to use nickel formations more than they want.

Finally- The OG pickup is vital. THE weak link last year was Waters (watch the tape). He did “okay” in run block and poor in pass block. Rudy was not effective against NT’s with good first step BUT I watched every offensive play of Casey W. against the better NT/DT’s and he wins a huge majority of the time because he knows how to leverage.

So Guys and Gals, let’s see how the Chiefs use these draft picks before we pass judgment.

  • April 23, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

I sure hope you’re right, napahobbs.

I thought we needed a Nose Tackle and at least two decent LB’s…to be even anywhere close to being competitive on D. I’ll defer to the experts, though. I guess.

I think Michael summed up my feelings…it looks like a really good draft. Just, for another team.

  • April 23, 2010  - Michael says:

What can you do, you know. They know the team, they know how the players they chose will fit and how to use them.

We’ve got a bunch of guys reputed to be great football people in charge with Pioli, Haley, Weiss, Crennel and the rest of the coaching staff. I got to believe they know how to set up their scouting department, too.

I have to believe that Weiss and Crennel came in and said, alright, this is what we can do with what we’ve got, and this is what we should be looking for. I have to believe that whatever they need but didn’t get in this draft they will find somewhere-college FA’s, trades, vets let go by other teams, whatever.

After the draft there’s always vets cut loose by other teams who can be plugged into roles for a year of two. Sometimes you find diamonds in the rough with college FA’s. Trades still can be made.

Just like everyone else here, I certainly hope this is the scenerio for the team. They know what they got, what they need, and how to get it.

I’ve had an unhealthy fondness for the Chiefs for more than 40 years, so I’ve seen all the ups and all the downs. I’m really tired of the down. I want to look forward to seeing the Chiefs compete on Sundays again. I want it to be fun, exciting and inspiring again. I want them to win again. If these guys can pull that off, I don’t give a wit how they do it.

  • April 24, 2010  - R.C. says:

Way to go Scott (Steadmen) Pioli

  • April 24, 2010  - Tracy says:

Thanks for the optimistic breath of fresh air, napahobbs.

We should not forget the mantra that echoed throughout Bob’s previews of college players eligible for the draft–”The Right 53?”

Scott Pioli knows Charlie Weiss and Romeo Crennel probably as well as anybody in the NFL, let alone the Chiefs’ organization. They most certainly have assessed the current roster and knew going into the draft what they felt it lacked.

Maybe, just maybe, Crennel will make an adjustment that lets the team realize DJ’s vast potential. Maybe Glenn Dorsey at NT is an answer to some other defensive woes. Maybe Myles Austen (sp?) does not have his breakout game if Eric Berry is playing safety.

We need to take it as an article of faith that Weiss and Crennel will make positive changes and that both men know better than we do just what is best for the team.

What we see is improved field position, better team speed and a more positive locker room.

The Moeaki choice is puzzling but likely stems from the Pioli-Ferentz relationship. We’ll see.

  • April 24, 2010  - SG says:

    “The Moeaki choice is puzzling…”

When even someone who combines such blind faith in our GM’s decision-making with this statement, it speaks painful volumes.
